Gold prices by unit at today's spot
How the gold calculator works
The calculator converts your holding to troy ounces (1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams), multiplies by today's spot price to get its market value, and compares that with what you paid, including the dealer premium.
Gain = (oz × spot today) − (oz × spot at purchase × (1 + premium))
The value shown is the spot value. A dealer buying your coins or bars back will usually pay a little under spot, so your actual sale price may be lower.
Why the premium matters
If you paid 4% over spot, gold has to rise about 4% before you break even. Small coins and fractional pieces carry the highest premiums. Read How to Invest in Gold to compare coins, bars and ETFs.
